Article 17 Crystal Elves in Flintloque part two

Continuing from last time Andy continues in Flintloque with part two of his use of Alternative Armies 28mm high fantasy miniatures in his games. Namely the Crystal Elves and their axe and sword wielding armoured warriors.  Read on for part two of this adventure.  If you missed any of the previous sixteen articles you can see them all for free on the blog by clicking on this TAG.  A variety of adventures in Flintloque mainly set in the Witchlands.  If you would like to Begin in Flintloque visit our website HERE for Escape the Dark Czar and free content and videos.  Enjoy!  GBS

Using Crystal Elves in Flintloque - Part 2 -
Garde Infantry and Foot Knights

As you will hopefully have read in my last article I've been looking through the 28mm High Fantasy ranges on the Alternative Armies website as I had the idea of looking to see which figures would fit into my Flintloque sections either with or without conversion.

Although there were several possibilities in the Crystal Elf ranges, I was initially drawn to set CE22 the Elf Assassins, and talked about them in my last article, but this time I would like to draw your attention to packs CE10 Garde Infantry Command, CE11 Garde Infantry and CE12 Crystal Elf Foot Knights. Their uniforms show their elite status and fit perfectly with Ferach Napoleonique uniforms as lets face it, the Crystal Elves are where it all began with regards to Blacke Powder.

My idea for using these figures was that the Ferach force has become sick of fighting the same foes day after day or night after night as the corpses are just reanimated after being shot. This is not so easy if they have been cut limb from limb, so bands of troops have got together using old style weapons scavenged from old manor houses they pass during their retreat. They are the brain child of Colonel Jean Etienne Folies Bergere who has banded these troops into units nicknamed 'The Levellers' as they level the playing field.

What is available and what did I get
In pack CE10 there are 5 figures including a leader, musician, standard bearer and 2 troopers, one with a halberd and one with a spear, in pack CE11 there are 4 troopers, one with a sword, one with a bow and two with spears, and finally in pack CE12 there are two with 2 handed axes, one with a 2 handed sword, and  one with sword and shield. As ever with Alternative Armies you have the option to buy them as packs or as individual figures which lets you tailor your force to exactly what you want. All of them could easily fit into Flintloque sections in some way.

From the pack CE10 I ordered the leader, plus two of the troopers with spears, from pack CE11 I ordered two of the troopers with sword, and from pack CE12 I ordered all three knights with 2 handed weapons.

How did I paint the figures
As the Garde uniforms are very similar to those of Ferach Flintloque troopers I used the same colour scheme of mid blue, red and white, but used brown for boots and belts to make them stand out from regular Ferach troops and added more gold as the uniforms are quite ornate.

The Knights feature a lot of plate armour which I have just painted in a dull silver metallic colour to look more functional than ornate, as the wearers are doing a tough dangerous job so value protection over how good they look!

How have I used them in my games
As stated above, as the Ferach force has retreated the troops have soon learned that Zombies can be shot several times and keep coming back so brute force face to face is often the only way to take them down permanently. Some Ferach troopers have therefore returned to their martial skills before Black Powder and many of the creepy old manor houses that they have passed in the Witchlands often have archaic weapons displayed on the walls.

The leader figure from pack CE11 has been used to represent Colonel Jean Etienne Folies Bergere himself. In my games he is a Veteran / Elite Officer as his unit were originally Garde Infantry. He is armed with a sword of exquisite quality and has the Quick Reflexes and Nerves of Steel character traits. He is therefore useful for leading from the front which suits a section that specialises in close combat.

The rest of the unit are all Elite with half being armed with muskets while the rest have close combat weapons. They have been hand picked by the Colonel so many have close combat orientated skills and traits. This is a useful combined arms section. I've found it best to mix the musket and melee specialist troops across the table so that the muskets can thin down the Dark Czar's forces as they advance and the melee specialists can then charge in backed up by the bayonets of their comrades.

I have also added a couple of special rules according to how the troops are armed and armoured which you could try out if your opponent agrees.

Boar Spear (cost 6 points) - The spears held by the Garde figures are heavy with a big cross guard. They still get a +3 melee modifier like a regular spear but if the Ferach figure armed with a Boar Spear wins a close combat on their own activation against a mortal or zombie opponent they can choose to impale the opponent as well as wounding them. This means that the opponent is held in place so may not move and may not damage anyone within range, if they win a combat this will simply mean that they have broken free of the spear. Likewise the figure armed with the spear may not attack anyone as they are concentrating on hold the opponent in place, but will still count for outnumbering purposes if an allied character attacks the impaled figure. A figure may be impaled by multiple spears at once.

2-handed Sword or Axe (cost 7 points) - While a regular sword or axe will give a +2 melee modifier, these vicious offensive weapons will give a +4 melee modifier when the character is activated as 'The Levellers' are all trained to use them to the maximum effect against their opponents. This reverts to a +2 melee modifier when being attacked due to an opponents activation as they are less useful in defence.

Plate Armour (cost 6 points) - This gives +1 to the wearers steady rating. In addition when the wearer is required to take a Steady check due to losing a melee or by being shot by a Blacke Powder weapon with an impact of 5 or less he rolls a D10 and avoids the Steady check on a roll of 8, 9 or 10.

How do they fit in with my narrative
As Saindoux's force are the rear guard of the Ferach retreat, Colonel Folies Bergere has been sent to assist. His unit is perfect for this kind of fighting and will hopefully help to permanently thin the zombie ranks and ease the pressure on Saindoux's troops.

The pursuing Vampyres led by Lady Wintermore are aware of 'The Levellers' and determined to prevent them giving the Ferach force the advantage.

What's next
I hope that you've enjoyed reading my further experiments with using Crystal Elf figures in my Flintloque sections and that I've inspired you to get some. There are also some excellent cavalry figures in the Crystal Elf range but I've concentrated on the infantry as infantry battles are my favourite Flintloque games.

I haven't finished looking at the Alternative Armies High Fantasy ranges yet, and I'll let you know how I get on in future articles.  Thank you for reading.

Asgard Space Marines collection painted by Mark Stevenson

A number of years ago we had the privilege of bringing a 28mm compatible range of classic miniatures back to the world. The Space Marines originally from Asgard Miniatures now at Alternative Armies. Mr Mark Stevenson is an avid miniature collector and enthusiast and it is my pleasure to be able to show you these pictures of his take on these miniatures.

Dating from around 1980 there are thirteen different miniatures in the Space Marines collection; from fully armoured to light suited. You can see them all HERE and they will work in any wargame setting which takes a role in the cosmos. We also have the whole collection as a single box with a saving.

Mark went with a cold white colour for the armoured space marines and a warmer orange for the ones in light space armour giving his work a tone of movies such as Moonraker which went for a hard science fiction take on combat outside the atmosphere. As you can see there is quite a size difference between the different armour grades making for a nice contrast. Here is a listing of all the codes:

SM1 Space Marine in full armour
SM2 Space Marine in light armour
SM3 Space Marine in full battle armour
SM3A Space Marine in full battle armour flying
SM4 Psionic Marine
SM5 Space Trooper with Force Axe
SM6 Space Trooper with AP Rifle
SM7 Space Trooper kneeling with Energy Mortar
SM8 Space Trooper Captain
SM9 Large Battle Droid
SM11 Space Marine Mortar with Crew (Three Miniatures)

Here are Mark's painted miniatures in that code order. Check these out!

Loud Ninja Games Event twenty percent off entire range and tell us your desires!

Manufactured in Scotland under license by Alternative Armies is the boutique 15mm range created by Eli Arndt called Loud Ninja Games.  This range of more than forty codes contains firm favourites among the 15mm science fiction wargaming community.

From the Chuhuac Space Raptors to the Yandrassi Empire as well the Ikwen and Wasteland Mutants it is full of original ideas.  For the next week until 9am GMT Monday 11th February 2019 we have taken twenty percent (20%) off the entire LNG range (not the already discounted bundles such as the Archon Mecha kits) of packs.  Have a browse and see what you like HERE.

While we hope you enjoy this event we would also like to ask you for your input, your thoughts which we can then send onto Eli which will give him notions on what next to add to the range.  You can send an email to us on sales@alternative-armies.com, you can post on our Facebook Group, you can visit Loud Ninja Games own Facebook Page.  You can comment on our blog posting too.  We will collate it all and let Eli know!

One possible avenue of expansion is the Yandrassi Empire.  The Yandrassi in an interstellar empire made up of dozens of species presided over by the enigmatic and unseen, Yan. While most of these species contribute to the collective through economic means, several species make their contribution through military service. The bulk of the military is made up of the diminutive Neeks and the martial Tavshar. These aliens are supported by the brutish Horgosi.  Foremost among this empire's forces are the Tavshar Archons a series of sleek mecha.  Standing over 50mm tall with many pose options and head variants there are six different Archons including the Guardian armed with a massive energy sword and a shield.  What could be added to the miniatures in this part of the LNG Range?

Another possible route of growth is are the Ikwen.  Plucky aliens resisting a superior alien invasion of their home world Kwiell.  Armed with what they can create and also steal in a guerilla war the Ikwen have an infantry platoon as well as some superior fighters and terrain as well as wild beasts and farm animals.  There is plenty of scope for the Ikwen to grow.  More foot soldiers and perhaps some cavalry too and portable weapons.  Who are they fighting against and have any of those aliens come in person to help the Ikwen?  What could be added to the miniatures in this part of the LNG Range?

Lastly perhaps some more odd and weird codes could be set in motion such as those in the Alien Encounters and Wasteland Mutants.  There are Road Wardens, Rad Zombies and Wasteland Raiders as well as the Terrorclops and the Buddies.  Super Mutants with strange mental powers too.  What else could be brought to the post apocalyptic world as part of the LNG Range?

Thanks for reading and enjoy the Event!

Tuscani Light Infantry and Campaigning Back Packs released for Flintloque

“With a grunt Antoine De Vassile brought the huge rifle up to his shoulder and took aim down the iron ring set atop the barrel. The muscles in his arms strained to cope with a firelock made for an Ogre but he had practised and drilled endlessly. He had joined the Condottierie a long time ago and had hunted monsters with this rifle and had accepted the broken shoulder and endless bruising it caused him. This rifle was death to the foes of the Emperor and it was gold in his pockets for his sister and mother. In the distance among the trees the Cacadores of the Goblin enemy flitted back and forth. A ball whipped past Antoine and a puff of smoke from ahead but he did not flinch. He breathed in and led the cockade wearing officer by a fraction and then leaned into the rifle and pulled the trigger. Like a mighty hammer the weapon slammed back and his view was stolen by a great plume of grey powder smoke. Antoine dropped to one knee and put the butt of the rifle into the soft soil looking to see the results of the shot even as his hand sought another thumb sized lead sphere to load. Wind pulled the smoke away and he saw that he had hit the officer true. The Goblin sagged against the blood soaked trunk of a tree his left arm missing along with half his chest from the impact. The Cacadores around the dead officer had frozen in shock and this made De Vassile smile. He rose and smoothly dropped the bullet into the hot barrel before looking left and right along the line of Wild Elves who even now were turning the Al-Garvey soldiers back.”

Welcome to Alternative Armies release for the Flintloque and Slaughterloo game systems for January 2019. Following up on July last year when we put the original and new line infantry Wild Elves online we are delighted to reveal the second full unit pack of Tuscani Elves who fight for the Emperor Mordred. This time the skirmishers who are elite troops and make use of some ruddy big guns!

51535 1o Condottierie Light Infantry
Despite a bitter enmity with the Carabiniers of the Grande Armee the skirmishers of the Wild Elves may in fact just be a little better than those elite Armoricans. Sought after by Marshals in Catalucia to hunt down Cacadores and Rifleorcs they are very good troops. They are Light Infantry and make use of Ogre Rifles. This set of miniatures in 28mm white metal gives you twelve Wild Elves a whole unit of light infantry. There are eight different poses of Tuscani Elves dressed in Condottierie uniform with bicorne and these are an Officer, a Standard Bearer, Musician, Sergeant and four different Troopers. We repeat the trooper poses in the unit pack. These miniatures are supplied with separate campaigning back packs (code BS29) which can be attached (as shown in the pictures) or left off. You can choose from a unit pack or single trooper booster. Choose from Unpainted with Bases or Painted and Based. Sculpted by Elton Waters and studio set painted by Mark Taylor. Go HERE.

BS29 Campaigning Packs
This great set is fantastic for any 28mm miniature which is out in the field in the time of Horse and Musket. Six different campaigning back packs each with its own features such as tied on sacks and bags, lengths of rope, food items, hatchet and short axe. Recessed in the rear to fit onto great coats and other uniform details. They can also be placed on bases or in dioramas as part of a terrain piece for extra interest. Choose from the set or select any single pack in any quantity. Go HERE.

We have a great many 'Bits and Sprues' in the range including Pies, Tankards, Feathers, Fruit, Tools, Drum and Standard and many more.

“Wild Elves are stronger and more agile than their noble brothers elsewhere in Armorica. Though not as graceful or elegant they are capable of feats that would test most Orcs in strength and they are more nimble on their feet too. Tuscani have sharp protruding teeth that look like fangs and do not tend to their hair which often hangs unkempt about their broad shoulders. They are expert hunters and make good soldiers.” - taken from Uniformation the Tuscani Wild Elves.

Uniformation Free Downloads for Flintloque and Slaughterloo
We have two different free resources for the Tuscani. A three page article expanding from the books 5025 War in Catalucia and 5030 Slaughterloo a resource giving you a history, character profile, game statistics and tables for Flintloque and Slaughterloo plus uniform and accounts of line and light infantry. Click HERE to download. Also a one page article on the Tuscani Skirmishers with story and optional rule. Click HERE to download. Enjoy!

By Bloody Fist and Broken Tusk – Flintloque Scenario
A stand alone full scenario which features some famous characters. It makes use of several free files and also the 5025 War in Catalucia game book. This is a set piece scenario which can go very differently each time it is played. You will need the four page insert for 5109 Sharkes Chosen for the character profiles it contains. Also the Tuscani Wild Elf Uniformation insert for the game statistics it contains. These are linked in the scenario three page PDF. Will Sharke escape the ambush or fall to Wild Elf skill? The scenario can also be expanded or played with two players. CLICK HERE to download it from our website hosting.

We hope you like these new miniatures with their big guns and also the free resources. I am thinking on writing a scenario which features the newly recruited and trained Wild Elf skirmishers going up against a Jabberwock or two in a Wylde Magicke game of firelock against claws. We will see what happens but if you would like to see this scenario happen or just want to ask a question drop me a line on sales@alternative-armies.com or visit our Facebook Group.
