Fuel Tank 01 6mm new at Bradley Miniatures

Our 6mm scale release this month is from Bradley Miniatures who add another code to their growing range.  This time it is the Fuel Tank which provides objectives and visual interest on your battlefield in any game system.  Go HERE for the range or read on for more about this new code and the range.

This liquid storage tank is a typical sight at any aerospace facility across Terranic space. Use it to represent liquid tritium fuel, unstable hydrazine propellant, or whatever your spaceport needs to keep your aerospace ships in the air.

BR034 Fuel Tank 01: A single highly detailed resin model in 6mm scale.  It could be empty or it could contain highly volatile gas or perhaps something even more vital.  The model is 35mm tall and 30mm across.  No assembly required and supplied unpainted.

Here you can see the Fuel Tank flanked by a Tiger Combat Walker and the mighty Sekmet Assault Rig mecha.  Above the Fuel Tank is in play as a Stalker Missile Carrier and Nemian Assault Tank in desert colours make their way past it.

No matter which science fiction or modern game system you play in 6mm you will find something of interest in the Bradley Miniatures range.  Here is the current list of pack codes each of which comes as a single model or in a pack from which you can select a single if you wish to tailor your army to exact numbers.  Go HERE.

Alternative Armies has a wide selection of limited editions which are favoured by collectors.  They depict famous leaders, commanders, odd ball characters as well as seasonal specials and promotional figures.  While none are vital to playing the games they do add interest.  Each is supplied in a pack with its unique number written on its insert.  We also have a 'swop drawer' which contains any sold out limited packs which have been traded back to us or returned from store stock or other places.  This changes weekly but if you are looking for a certain code then contact us on sales@alternative-armies.com and ask.  We sell them at face value compared to other in stock limited codes.

Article 23 Dogmen Engineers in the Witchlands

Dogmen Engineers

I hope that you have enjoyed my articles about Gorgon Lightfoote and his Flintloque section. He will return in future articles as I've really enjoyed creating his force, but for now I wanted to get back to telling you about my Ferach and Witchlands forces as there are so many great units available. For this article I wanted to tell you about a very useful set......56537 Dogmen Engineers. There are some excellent figures in this group and I've found them useful for several scenarios in the Witchlands.

What's in the set?

There are 8 miniatures in the unit pack consisting of a Dogman Officer on a resin horse, a laden pack horse, 4 Dogmen Engineers on foot and a scenic piece of engineering supplies. Individual figures are available but I bought the whole set as it is such a great price and saves off single pieces.

The Officer figure is pointing and clearly ordering his troops around. As well as commanding the Engineers he could easily be used to command any Dogmen section as he is such a great figure. He also has a fantastic moustache, so is worth buying for this alone!

The four Engineers on foot are very characterful. There is a one eyed NCO figure holding a bomb and pistol, an Engineer digging with a shovel, an Engineer carrying a barrel, and an Engineer carrying some planks and a hammer.

The pack horse is a nice  model, loaded up with supplies, as is the scenic piece containing bombs, quick fuse, box and barrel.

 How did I paint them?

As I wanted to use them with my Finklestein Dogmen they have been given dark blue jackets with yellow facings. Trousers for the officer I did in white but for the regular engineers grubbing around in the mud I thought that grey was more practical! Any boots, hats and equipment are black.  They can be put in any uniform such as white for Ostarians if you want.

How I've used them in my games

This has been a very useful set for various scenarios. You may have already seen the pack horse in my 11th article 'A Call of the Wild!' which I used as the objective for the wolves, and to be defended by it's own side. It is good for all sorts of escape scenarios as my Ferach forces attempt to evade the Undead.

As I suggested above, the officer figure has taken command of my Finklestein Dogmen troops which are becoming a fair sized force. He really is a great figure (did I mention his moustache!) and looks like he is issuing orders in the heat of combat.

The Engineers figures can also be used as Sappers and are needed for scenarios where something needs to be built or destroyed. Rules for both troop types can be found in the Grapeshotte expansion book. My games usually involve something like a bridge over a frozen river which has to be repaired so that the Ferach forces can cross and then destroyed in another scenario to slow down the pursuit! These scenarios usually involve a force trying to defend the Engineers/Sappers while they undertake the specific task.

For repairs I set a number of repair points on the bridge and each special repair action taken by an Engineer/Sapper each turn removes one of these points. If a figure is shot at by the enemy in a turn they may not use a repair action that turn as they are too busy keeping their head down. Equally they may not try to make repairs while in hand to hand combat! This makes the player have to be aggressive with his defenders, while balancing out whether to activate his Engineers/Sappers as early in the turn as possible.

For destroying the bridge it is given IRP's (Impact Resistance Points) as outlined in the Grapeshotte book, then the Engineers/Sappers place powder kegs against the structure. Kegs are Small, Medium, Large, Very Large or Huge and have to be carried to the structure, primed, have their fuze set and then lit. The size of the keg indicates how easy it is to carry (which is why I have often drafted in the model of 'the Tap Room Ogre' as a Sapper) but then also dictates the amount of damage caused using the rules for a Howitzer shelle plus 25% rounding up. Again rules for this are all in the Grapeshotte book. You can make the job harder according to the distance the kegs have to be carried and I do this by using one of the great new Beer Barrel barricades as it also looks like a pile of powder kegs. Models have to move between this and the bridge with their kegs while being shot at by the enemy. All I'll say is don't have characters carry them too close together as a stray shot can cause a keg to explode!

Finally, I feel that the NCO has a slightly wild look about him so could easily be used with negative character traits. Either way, Engineers can use grenades so he is perfect for adding these to your games. You can also use the scenic piece in this set to resupply characters that have used the grenades that they are carrying!

The continuing narrative

Some Engineers have joined the Ferach Scouts ahead of the main army to insure that any logistical problems are overcome before the main body of troops get there. There are many frozen streams and rivers, or broken bridges that need to be crossed as the ice cannot hold the weight of horses or cannon, and exposure to the freezing water could be fatal. There is often only a small amount of time to fix the situation without slowing the retreat.

Some Engineers have also joined the rearguard to attempt to slow up the pursuit. While the Undead are immune to the cold they still have horses and cannon which cannot get across frozen rivers and streams without a bridge. It is often the case that a bridge that is built one day is destroyed a day or two later with troops desperately trying to cross before it is destroyed. There have been several heroic last stands to insure the success of this work.

Wherever they are, Engineers can support troops with their grenades which can sometimes tip the odds in their favour.

Conclusion

I hope that you've enjoyed reading about my Dogmen Engineers and if you haven't already, that I have inspired you to try out Engineers and Sappers in your games. While the Dogmen Engineers set is great, there are Engineer sets available for other races too. The Undead Engineers set with a Vampyre Engineer and Zombie Sappers looks particularly amusing...........

Free Flintloque Micro Scenario for your free Tree Demon this month

“Branches clumped and wend together into arms with reaching wooden fingers.  It towered over the Dogman and as the tree moved its trunk split into an opening mouth.  Van Barkin stumbled as he moved backwards but training took over and he brought his carbine around and aimed at the tree. With a sharp bang and a thump the lead ball smacked into the tree and the other Dogmen woke with a start.”

It is my pleasure to present a micro scenario for Flintloque players that ties into the free model in every order this month from Alternative Armies.

Stick it to the Dogs – Micro Scenario: Becoming lost in the spooky forest a section of Pudigrochumsberg Dogmen awaken to find that a Tree Demon, a monster of Wylde Magicke, has decided to destroy them for entering its domain.  A two page PDF which you can download from our website storage by CLICKING HERE.  See all the free files we have on our FREE DOWNLOADS page.

While it is the 56588 Rache Carabiniers who feature in this scenario it will work well with any small section of troops if you prefer to use Elves or Orcs for instance from your collection.  Monsters are rare during the Mordredian Wars but Valon is a strange world and they do crop up.

55011 General Bardaghul for Flintloque and Slaughterloo

“It was in the deep sewers and crypts that he realised there was something special to his mind.  Among the other ghouls that rove under the streets of Moskova he seemed rare in that he could control his urges.  While others tore at the rotting meat that fell from above he held back.  This had him noticed by a K.G.B Liche who ordered his attending Zombies to drag the ghoul into the snow bound light.  Assuming his end was neigh Bardaghul silently awaited a blade or bullet.  Instead he was taken in front of the Dark Czar himself....”

Now in a new mold this code has not been seen for many years and returns with a new information article for Flintloque and Slaughterloo players.   I give you General Bardaghul favoured Ghoul of the Dark Czar.  Get this pack HERE and see the whole Witchlands Army HERE.

A lovely miniature mounted on an Undead Horse perfect for leading the Kryptovski Death Guard or being part of your Witchlands forces.

Uniformation – General Bardaghul: A one page article containing background as well as Flintloque and Slaughterloo game rules and uniform details for this character. Hosted on our server download this PDF by CLICKING HERE.

Get into Flintloque beginning with 5024 Escape from the Dark Czar set which contains ten resin 28mm miniatures as well as a booklet of core game rules, characters and three scenarios plus bases and dice.  A great way to enter the Witchlands and the retreat from Moskova.

HOF Fire Team 15mm rules and loads of free files online

Back in 2012 myself and Bob Minadeo published a wee rules set for 15mm scale grid based skirmishing with neat mechanics and generic setting (though it came with three settings included).  Recently Alternative Armies has had a fair bit of interest in the game which is long out of print but is a paid for digital download (at 20% less than print price and including all the terrain tile sets for free now) and for the free files made for HOF Fire Team.  Go HERE for the rules.

HOF Fire-Team is a dynamic tactical grid 15mm game with a setting from ultra modern to the far future. Fire Team pits squads of soldiers, guerrillas, police, and thieves or just about anyone else with a grudge against one another. Use miniatures on single bases add any new ones of your choice as it is generic. Players command a number of Teams. These being Fire Teams, Support Teams, Command Teams and trusting to sound small unit tactics and the luck of the dice they attempt to carry out their mission objectives.

Using the 'tech level' generic aspect of the rules you can field any miniatures you want.  Create any setting you wish.  Three settings are included. The Ion Age - Prydia Aflame (Muster and Retained fight in a bitter civil war for the future of the Prydian Precinct while the shadow of the Khanate ever looms), The Pan Galactic Empire (A vastness of human and alien life in constant struggle in a galaxy that is rich with resources, planets and conflict) and Argo Cities of the Teeming Future (The Earth teems with seething billions all housed in cities hundred of kilometres wide.  The law is harsh and mutants and cyborgs walk among us. Keep the Peace...if you can).  See the HOF Range for suitable figures.

CLICK HERE to download a zip file of free additional PDF's for the game including advanced rules and a scenario. Craig over at ORCS IN THE WEBBE has put all of the former Barking Irons magazine scenarios, solo play rules and more for HOF FT up to read. Released in 2012 there are independent articles and reviews online for this game HERE for Rob Alderman's video review on Youtube and HERE for Dropship Horizon Blog and its interview about the game.  Note when released this game was from 15mmcouk which was and is a part of Alternative Armies.

TOR17 The Guillotine re-mastered and released

We are continuing our project to bring classic ranges back to the world and this time we present the last of the commonly available 1980's Torture Chamber 28mm codes; the Guillotine.  As with all the other codes in this range it contains adult themes and single pieces from packs can be had on the page for that code.  Go HERE.

TOR17 The Guillotine. This pack contains all the 28mm metal pieces needed to assemble a guillotine as well as a resin platform for the machine to stand upon (eight pieces in total) and two other pieces those being the Executioner and the Victim. There is also a severed head in a bowl which can be placed as pleased.  When build the machine of death is 90mm tall and stands 30mm wide.

Here are views of the models as you can see it is a rather special piece.  Great for fantasy or historical settings in wargaming or diorama (The Terror anyone?). The machine itself can fit any kneeling victim or it can be left without one; make your choice while assembling. The Executioner is standing next to a ground borne lever which will drop the blade.  The victim is a bound and kneeling nude woman.  A bowl contains a severed head.  You can have the machine on its own, or the executioner, the bowl or the victim select your option on page HERE.

We have now completed all of the released codes from this range.  There are a few more releases to come later this year which will be codes never before seen and have been dormant in molds for nearly forty years!

It is a little early to jingle the bells but an important message from us regarding our painting service.  That and our stock has been updated again with many new painted and based choices for various game systems.

Alternative Armies sells many thousands of painted miniatures every year to wargamers in the form of singles, skirmishing bands, units and entire armies.  If we have it then it is almost certain we will offer it painted if asked.  Our stock of ready to ship painted which you can see on Pro-Painted Fantasy, Pro-Painted Valon, Pro-Painted Science Fiction and lastly Pro-Painted Historical and Myth pages.  As well as this stock we paint for customers to order.

Our last shipping globally for painted miniatures each year is about the 9th of December.  We are now asking those keen on getting a quote for painting to contact us on sales@alternative-armies.com with their list of proposed codes.  Our prices are very reasonable and include the miniature, its painting, its base, scenic basing effect and varnish (if you wish it) plus secure freight.  It is first come first booked until our team of painter ladies is up to capacity for December cut off.
