HobGoblin Miser and Othari Aristo released for Flintloque plus free downloads

KEEPING THE COUNT STRAIGHT
Coins don’t fall from the sky. Coins come from those not willing to give them and they try to escape your grasp as quickly as they can; as if it were fabled Wylde Magicke. Keeping the count straight falls to those in the commissariat, to those in the back room with the thick leather purses and those in secure rooms with guards outside.

Who keeps the count straight? What kind of being is taken on byMagnates, by Generals, by Kings? A special breed known as the ‘Miser’. A miser never spends any coins. Not those of his employer nor those of his own. This makes him excellent for seeking out the breaches and drains where coins leak away.

In the Army of Albion and the great counting houses of Londinium there is a shortage of Gnomes so the misers are on the whole Hob Goblins from Taffsea and Ratmen from Joccia. Coming from the cobbles streets where murder, starvation and robbery are commonplace a miser who survives that upbringing develops an almost supernatural sense to where money can be found.

Many rank and file Orcs have found themselves swinging from ropes or facing the tender mercies of a Bessie musket when a miser has uncovered their taking of a few pennies. Several Lords and other notables have been reduced to penury in the same manner. Watch out for a miser with authority..they keep the counts straight.

53016 Hob Goblin Miser
This code contains one 28mm scale white metal miniature which stands about 28mm tall.  A civilian in long coat and hat with pad and pencil to keep the count.  This miniature works well in many game systems in High Fantasy and of course Flintloque and Slaughterloo.  Goes excellently with the Orcs of Albion plus Valon Civilians.  You can purchase this code unpainted or painted and based for immediate play.  Supplied with a 25mm square base.  Price 2.00GBP.  Go HERE.

We have created a one page article called 'Keeping the Count Straight' which contains a short tale, rules for Flintloque, rules for Slaughterloo as well as a scenario seed which is hosted on our website as a PDF; click HERE to download it to your device.  Enjoy.

YANI OTHARAN - A NEW GENTLEORC
The ailing Otharmann Empyre is an exotic and semi magicke place which is filled with contrasts. From the rich bazaars and gardens of Istanbaal to the dirt and bloody soaked sands of Aegypt the Sultan rules over many millions. While Urop is far off there are those among the Othari who wish to become more like them. From the Janissaries who have become the ‘new model army’ to merchants who sell the fashions of Londinium and Lyonesse.

A son of a wealthy Istanbaal cloth seller Yani Otharan begged his father for enough gold to travel to Urop and to see for himself the places of soot, smoke and mighty ships. With an agreement and an promise to return to his family in two years time Yani set out from the Blaake Seafor Ostaria to begin his tour. With little experience of the world outside of his home city and equipped with a lot of coin and an idea of how a ‘gentleorc’ behaves it was not long until Yani became a real fop. After coming near being robbed he hired an entourage of Dogmen as guides and protectors. Yani Otharan is now on his way to Venna the capital of Ostaria and hopes, despite his guides pleas not to, to meet the Emperor Klaffenhund. The Othari Aristo has attracted a lot of attention with his generous tipping of anyone who crosses his path. There may be a full scale riot!

57039 Othari Aristo
This code contains one 28mm scale white metal miniature which stands about 28mm tall.  A wealthy Othari in fine clothes with tricorne hat and lace hankerchief.  This miniature works well in many game systems in High Fantasy and of course Flintloque and Slaughterloo.  Goes excellently with the Othermann Empyre range plus Valon Civilians.  You can purchase this code unpainted or painted and based for immediate play.  Supplied with a 25mm square base.  Price 2.00GBP.  Go HERE.

We have created a one page article called 'A Real Fop' which contains a short tale, rules for Flintloque, rules for Slaughterloo as well as a scenario seed which is hosted on our website as a PDF; click HERE to download it to your device.  Excellent!

Da Vinci behemoth scratchbuilt by Paul Thompson using our 15mm Da Vinci Tank!

“It is the winter of 1502 at the court of the notorious Cesare Borgia and while the snows fall outside the great table is surrounded by some of the most brilliant and ruthless men of that age. Among them is Borgia himself, patron and wealth bringing to his table two men among the many who will live on in history. The first is Niccolo Machiavelli who will use Borgia as the basis for his text The Prince. The other is an aged Leonardo Da Vinci whose mind is a wonder filled with designs that will influence a world to come. Employed as a military architect Da Vinci has plans for weapons and machines of war that he has no desire to give to Cesare Borgia. While it is not known if Machiavelli whispered a warning in the old man's ear it is wonderful to dream of what might have been said on those dark winter nights.” - Gavin Syme (GBS)

Sometimes a lovely piece of modelling in 15mm scale really catches your eye and this little build by wargamer Paul Thompson did just that for me this weekend.  Taking the Alternative Armies HOT Da Vinci Tank as his starting point he created a behemoth for use as an element in HOTT 2nd Edition.

Using a combination of matchsticks (balsa wood) and glue alongside careful cuts and some white metal buckler shields (we have a similar one on the arm of a Skeleton in HOT14) a pair of legs were assembled with a platform upon which the Da Vinci Tank could be placed for play.  A 40mm base as per the HOTT rules for a Behemoth with the great effect of a 'footstep' implanted into the soil of the base.  The tank can be used on its own too.  It is not a complex build rather a piece of artistry and imagination.  Well done Paul!

Two packs in the HOT 15mm Fantasy range designed by Sam Croes. While not strictly fantasy these packs straddle the divide between the real world of the Renaissance and the invented world of fantasy. They can be used for both and 'Da Vinci World' is an accepted army list for several wargame systems. We have a true scale 15mm version of Da Vinci's tank, his turtle car, a wooden behemoth and would spread cannon carnage on a battlefield. We also have the great man himself Leonardo Da Vinci on foot and on horseback so you can add him as a character to your games. Fans of Renaissance Warfare, fans of 15mm Fantasy warfare and Furioso HERE.

HOT101 Da Vinci Tank
This resin and white metal 15mm scale vehicle kit depicts the famous Tank or 'Turtle Car' of Leonardo Da Vinci. Composed of two resin hull pieces easily assembled and two sprues of white metal cannon barrels you can add this vehicle to your collection.  Shown with Da Vinci for scale (not supplied 15mm tall) the vehicle is approx 50mm wide and 25mm tall assembled. Go HERE

HOT102 Leonardo Da Vinci
This small pack contains three 15mm scale white metal miniatures. The famous inventor, thinker, artist of the Renaissance Leonardo Da Vinci on foot in robes holding a scroll of parchment and a scale model of his Tank (see HOT101) and a horse with a mounted version of the same miniature showing Da Vinci riding.  Go HERE

The Othari in Flintloque 3rd edition a free download

Next week Alternative Armies is releasing a new Othari so we thought it would be nice to publish the play test resource which we are building for the still far off 'Blood on the Sand' game book for Flintloque 3rd edition.  Four pages with all you need to bolt onto any other game book and to get Othari and Aegyptian Halflings onto your table.  Go HERE for the range and the link for the download.

A free Flintloque resource to download from our Website on the Otharmann Empyre page HERE. Four pages giving you an introductory background plus racial tables and unique rules plus notes for getting Othari and Aegyptian Halflings into your games.  It is a playtest official document for which you will need to add any game book for 3rd edition or the 5024 Escape the Dark Czar beginners box set to get the rules to get the figures on the table.  It is a bolt on article.  So if you have Janissaries, Household Warriors, Camelry and other Othari troops this is an article for you as we test things out for 'Blood on the Sand'.

The Otharmann Empyre is often seen as the sick weakling of the great powers of Valon but that is not quite true.  Certainly the Emperor Mordred destroyed their army at the Battle of the Pyramids but the Elves were so outnumbered that it was a close run thing.  The Othari get aid from the Army of Albion and its Royul Navye as well as having more Wylde Magicke than any Elf, Orc or Dwarf army can manage.  Few know that the bulk of the Sultan's war hosts are tied up in an endless three way struggle in the Odeatha region against the minions of the Dark Czar and others.  Aegypt is only a part of the glittering scimitar of the Otharmann Empyre.

We hope you enjoy this free download and feedback is welcome by message, email or comment.

VNT40 Scorpion Scourge skuttling out now!

“The Barbarian kicked the door with a force no other member of the party could ever hope to match.  His fur clad boot splintering the wooden planks and the frame holding them too.  As the wood, now only good for a cooking fire, exploded into the room beyond the corridor the Barbarian stepped back and raised his  axe ready for any attack.  Silence came from within the room.  No Goblins or Night Horrors awaited the adventurers. Instead a strange sound began and then gained in volume.  Nothing could be seen in the room...and then.  Almost as one the Barbarian, Thief, Bard and Cleric noticed the floor was rippling.  Rippling and moving towards the broken remains of the door.  They could really have used a Wizard and a fireball but Ribald was gone.  They ran.  Hoping the mass of black scuttling Scorpions could not keep up.”

I have only ever seen Scorpions behind glass and never in the wild...just as well..scary.  These new white metal creatures are not likely to sting you though so that is great.  Now on the Alternative Armies website a new value pack of Scorpions in one pose. Go HERE or read on for more.

VNT40 Scorpion Scourge
This code contains  ten of one pose of white metal miniature approx 14mm long and 6mm tall to top of stinger.  They work in 28mm and 15mm scale for any fantasy setting plus modern, horror or any other setting. These miniatures are not supplied with bases and are supplied unpainted. Select your choice from the drop down product menu.  Choose from a pack or three packs with a 10% saving applied; or a massive 100 Scorpions saving 25% off the single creature price. No assembly required.  Go HERE. Poses in this code are as follows:

VNT40-01: Scorpion on the ground with tail raised and claws forward.

Here are some more images of the Scorpions including scenic shot with one of our 28mm Crystal Elves (CE24-04 Infantry with Halberd) plus a scale shot with 15mm and 28mm miniature to compare.  We have other codes suitable for use as multitudes and in your dungeon questing adventures.

FL29 Mischief of Rats
This code contains ten from two different poses of white metal miniatures approx 18mm in length. Great quality, choice and value. These miniatures are not supplied with bases and are supplied unpainted. Select your choice from the drop down product menu. Choose from a pack or three packs with a 10% saving applied; or a massive 100 mixed Rats saving 25% off a single pack price! Go HERE.

VNT29-02 Stricken Adventurer
When you sign up with a party all you see are riches and glory in store.  Sadly not for all.  For some the adventure ends in a tunnel or cavern injured with something nasty gnawing at your leg.  This fun miniature is an unfortunate adventurer who is being nibbled upon.  One of our favourites and great for your dungeon or gaming table.  Go HERE.

Article 7 Looking at the bigger picture by Andy Jefcoate

The wind blows and the sleet falls in winter! The seventh in a series of linked Flintloque articles by Andy Jefcoate about his forays in the Witchlands and in Flintloque. If you want to catch up on the first to sixth articles where he got his starter set and then tried it out followed by a nail biter of a scenario and then get his Pug Dogs marching plus more Cavalry then you can read them on our blog HERE. In this article he expands his future horizon. With pictures of his own painted collection. Read on and enjoy! GBS

Looking at the Bigger Picture

My eventual plan is to play a game of 'Slaughterloo' set in the Witchlands. There, I've said it, even though I'm several years away at the rate I paint my figures! I enjoy playing Flintloque very much, particularly the narrative nature of the game, but as my forces grow I'm at the point where they are too big for a normal sized Flintloque game, so it's good to have a plan.

With this in mind I'm continuing to build my forces into armies. I started talking about this in my 4th article by consolidating some of my characters into units but this process has continued. The characters I add are mainly the ones that catch my eye and that I want to paint, but every army needs its basic rank and file troopers too.

The Ferach Army
With the Ferach force I already have a fair sized Finklestein Dogman infantry contingent with Captain Ludwig Schwarzenbach's 12 dog unit from the Witchlands Dogman (including Hulmutt Jucken), and then the 10 Pugglesberg Jagers plus Captain Wolfe that joined them later. Although these units will expand in time I felt that my Ferach force needed some more elves. At present there are only the 10 Carabiniers including Colonel Gelure, the 5 Witchlands Cavalrymen, and a handful of Elf Witchlands infantry including Ayers and Saindoux himself. I decided that the latter needed to be expanded into a regular infantry unit.

As I've said before, the Elf Witchlands line infantry are brilliant for my narrative as they have varying uniforms and are all wrapped up against the cold, perfect for an Army fleeing through the frozen wastes. Despite their different look, if you want to you can still tie them together as a unit by using a small pallet of colours across all the figures in that unit. I like to do this by using a lot of the blue, grey, red or yellow that I would use on regular Ferach Elf infantry with a few additional colours thrown in here and there.

As Hulmutt Jucken joined my Dogman Witchlands unit, Ayers has now joined my Witchlands Elf infantry as their standard bearer. I decided to make them into an initial unit of 10, so I bought 8 regular soldiers from pack 51508 Elf Line Infantry Witchlands. The only thing left was a unit leader so I also bought pack 51006 the 7th Command of the Garde. This pack contains four Elves on foot, an Officer of the Chassuers (Light Infantry), an Officer of the Ligne (Line Infantry), an Officer of the Garde (Line Infantry) and an Agent of the Revolutionary Council (Spy). This last figure can be purchased as 2 different versions with or without spectacles and the kind people at Alternative Armies will supply whichever version you prefer (I got both) if you ask them by email.

I now had a leader for my Elf unit in the form of the Officer of the Chassuers, and for now the others have joined Saindoux as a Command squad. Boell Umfrage has remained with Saindoux too, as his bodyguard.

The Dark Czar's force
My existing troops are great for a beginner as they consist of 14 Savant Zombie dismounted cavalry (including Preserovitch and his men plus 8 Zombiski Cossacks), 5 mounted Zombiski Cossacks, 11 Werewolf Licantzrop Jagers plus their Vampyre leader, then a further 2 Vampyres (1 mounted and 1 on foot) with a Liche. As the undead are all Savant Zombies you don't need to worry about brain freeze or the distance from the Liche.

However, I felt that this force was rather elite and has far too many leaders so would benefit from some regular Zombie Line Infantry as these should really form the bulk of this type of army. I decided to have an initial unit of 12 and as I already had a Vampyre and a Liche, I bought 10 regular zombie infantry figures from pack 55508

As I mentioned in my 4th article I had already painted a Vampyre from pack 55005 the Latrinislav Command pack who will be the leader of this unit. I have also now painted the other Vampyre and Liche from this set so I have a second command unit ready to go. I do enjoy painting Vampyres!

The continuing narrative
This is brutally simple as regular troopers continue to join both forces. The elves either manage to outdistance the pursuit and join the relative safety of Saindoux's growing force or they fail and join the Dark Czar's force as regular Zombies.....................

Scenarios
I'm at the point that I don't generally use all of my figures in a single game. This is a good thing. As I said earlier, I particularly like the narrative nature of Flintloque so I concentrate on what a small band of characters is doing at any one time. The result of those small actions then builds into the larger picture of the army itself and influences the plot of other scenarios. Although I decide what scenarios to play you can never truly know what the result will be until those dice start rolling! To be honest I very rarely balance the points of the two forces in a scenario, it is purely about the story which I find to be less clinical and more fun. After a while you get to know what kind of characters work well either together or against one another.

In line with the continuing narrative above, a good scenario is to try to get a small force of Ferach soldiers to the safety of Saindoux's force by passing a piquet line of the Dark Czars forces. For this I like to use my newly painted zombie unit of 12 figures spread out in a line east to west across the middle of a 4' x 4' table (but still within command range of the Liche). A small unit of Ferach troops have to enter the table on the northern edge opposite the piquet line and pass them to escape off of the southern table edge. It is then all about how difficult you want it to be, for example 2 Elf soldiers will find that they are having a very bad day, but a unit of 10 shouldn't have too much trouble getting most of their number to safety.

What's next
I have a huge wish list of Flintloque figures and there are also some great new releases. It's time to place another order and I'll let you know how I get on in my next article.

Thank you for reading.

VNT38 Big Mouth Beast released!

Our first big 28mm scale fantasy release of the year is the Big Mouth Beast which was our festive season pre-order offer.  Our thanks for all those who took Alternative Armies up on the offer and we hope you are enjoying your maw monsters.  This creature is now on general release.  Go HERE or read on for more details.

VNT38 Big Mouth Beast
It is little more than a maw upon fast running legs!  Rows of serrated teeth within jaws which could eat a man whole!  Six eyes look for prey and its legs take it with great speed and nimble grace across any land flat or hazardous.  The Big Mouth Beast was sculpted by Kieran Billings and is a creature of nightmare. This multiple scale suitable monster is composed of four high quality resin parts and when assembled (with a small degree of pose choice).

These parts are the body, the lower jaw, the left leg and the right leg and once assembled (which is not difficult as it is a durable wargaming model) the monster is approx 50mm long and 30mm tall with the mouth having internal detailing.  You can purchase one or three with a 10% saving by selecting that option on the product page.

It is suitable for 15mm as a mighty beast or 28mm as a normal sized creature.  It could be inter galactic spawn, it could be a wizard's creation, it might be from the dungeon dimensions or roaming the wastelands.  It will fit right in with your campaigns.  The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted and it shown by us on a 50mm square base.  We show other miniatures from our ranges for scale and these are not included.  These are a 15mm scale HOF90 Cultist Holy Guard (in yellow and 16mm tall), a 15mm scale MDA47 Illusionist (black robes and 17mm tall), a 28mm scale VNT31-05 Liche Lord (Undead Hero and 30mm tall) and lastly for Flintloque there is 5024 General Saindoux (30mm tall).  Go HERE.

Kieran Billings has sculpted some really nice creatures which are great for wargaming in several scales and settings.  Here they are and you can click through to the website if they catch your eye.  I love that Air Squid..so weird!

Tap Room Ogre released for Fantasy and Flintloque

A new 28mm release from Alternative Armies. The Tap Room Ogre is a civilian or fantasy miniature which is great for any game system.  Sculpted by Elton Waters.  Go HERE or read on for more.

OTTO SAUFEN - A BARREL ON TAP
It can be a tough life running a tavern like the Fallen Angel especially when the tavern is located in southern Kartoffelburg which is a war zone.  Kartoffelburg is a cauldron of nations with the Ferach Empire and its allies fighting against the Krautians with the support of Greate Britorcn.  The Fallen Angel used to have beautiful stained glass windows and inscribed doors.  Now it has windows which are boarded up and doors which are studded with iron.  It would have been less, a smoking ruin, if it had not been for Otto Saufen.

Otto Saufen minded the bar in the tap room of the tavern until the owner was killed in a skirmish between Krautian infantry and Elvish carabiners.  That firefight also ruined the carefully tended gardens around the Fallen Angel and saw the four harnessed Rhinos which carried those with coin to nearby Fusserhaufen stolen by the Dwarves.  Once the musketry had ended Otto found himself landlord of a now damaged tavern.  But he was determined to survive and ever since he has sold booze both fine and foul from a line of barrels behind the bar.  Bullet holes and blackened timbers where comfortable furniture once was.  A Barrel on Tap at all times is his motto and he Otto even takes to the fields around the Fallen Angel when profit is near.

56116 Tap Room Ogre
This code contains one 28mm scale white metal miniature which stands about 35mm tall.  A civilian or un-uniformed soldier in shirt and trousers carrying a heavy barrel on his back.  This miniature works well in many game systems in High Fantasy and of course Flintloque and Slaughterloo.  Goes excellently with the Krautian Giant Legion or the Hunvarian Legion plus Valon Civilians.  You can purchase this code unpainted or painted and based for immediate play.  Supplied with a 30mm square base.  Price 4.00GBP.  Go HERE.

We have created a one page article called 'A Barrel on Tap' which contains a short tale, rules for Flintloque, rules for Slaughterloo as well as a scenario seed which is hosted on our website as a PDF; click HERE to download it to your device.  Enjoy.

CC1004 Stalinov Pencil Topper
Originally used as a promotional item in the 1990's and now back on our website in new molds we have the Stalinov pencil topper.  We offer the topper in resin or in white metal (it was originally in white metal only) but please note the metal version is rather heavy for accurate use of a pencil.  The topper is an altered version of the 28mm miniature KGB Liche Master Stalinov from 5002 with the base and lower coat removed and a recess for the writing implement (approx 24mm tall).  Note that pencils come in a multitude of lengths and ends and thicknesses so you may have to alter the topper to make it fit.

This is easy with the resin version.  It can also be mounted on a suitable pen or if you prefer you could use the topper as a Dwarf Liche for your Undead formations in Flintloque and Slaughterloo.  Go HERE for more images and select the option you desire.  Price is 2.00GBP (resin) and 4.00GBP (white metal).
