Tony Harwood's Pudigrochumsberg Barn for Flintloque

Tony Harwood has produced two books on the art of making wargames terrain and he features here on Alternative Armies pages on a regular basis with his scratchbuilt structures for his Flintloque collection.  Tony was inspired by the newly released Dogmen of Pudigrochumsberg last week and as a result he has created a building for them!

The article is in two parts and I suggest reading them in order.  The first part is HERE and the second part is HERE.  There are many images and a lot of 'in construction' shots and tips if you want to try your own hand at making this piece at home.

I think as I always do with Tony's work that it is a lovely piece of terrain.  Great construction, fab colours and a lovely finish.  Makes me a little jelous actually!  Only kidding.  Having the skill to create miniatures and terrain is not open to all of us.  After all I just weave the words into a world and that suits me.  My favourite aspect of the barn is the bone over the door it just sets the whole building off nicely.

You can find the brand new page on our website for the Pudigroan Dogmen HERE and if you want to learn more about them just search our blog using the tag for Pudigrochumsberg.  We currrently have Line Infantry and Casualties released and there will be news soon on the next code for October expanding this new army even more!

DH15 Dwarf Runic Golem first look!

Following up on last time when we have a concept post (read for more information) for the Dwarf Runic Golem which is going to be added to our 28mm High Fantasy range this month we have the first image of the molded up pieces of the kit.  The model now has a confirmed code and this is DH15 and it will be part of the Dwarf Range adding to the fourteen other pack codes there now.  The golem is about 65mm tall when assembled and we aim to have a release offer on it middle of this month. The offer will be a saving off release price of 18.00GBP and perhaps something free too as well as savings for multiple purchases too.

This magic construct will be great for any high fantasy 28mm scale wargame system if you are a fan of Dwarves.  As you can see the model is easy assembled from five resin pieces and the arms can be varied in pose at the shoulders.  The grid is in 1cm squares.  More information soon and a picture of the assembled and painted golem too.

Alternative Armies will be releasing a classic Torture Chamber set this month and some more re-mastered and re-molded OH Codes too.  All in time for the offers on this new kit.

Pudigroan Line and Casualties released for Flintloque

Here they are the first two codes in the whole Pudigrochumsberg Army which is in development at Alternative Armies.  We begin here and will expand with a general, cavalry, light infantry and far more across the rest of this year month by month.  Today it is the turn of the core unit in the Army of the Ruined Dogman nation the Line Infantry and their poor brother hounds who have fallen in battle. These first releases also see the creation of a new category page on our website for the Pudigroan and you can see it HERE.  All of the codes released in the army will be placed here. Additionally we have free worldwide postage just now on all orders over 10.00GBP product value until 30th September all you need to do is add to the cart the rest is automatic.  Read on!

56589 Pudigroan Dogman Line (10)  18.00GBP
This is a set of ten 28mm white metal Dogman miniatures giving you the core regular troops to form your Line Infantry sections and units; the centre of your new force.  These are for use with the rest of the Pudigrochumsberg army but they also serve well in Confederation of Finklestein collections and also revolutionary older style Ostarian Empire forces.   The command poses are an Officer smoking a clay pipe with his hand on a sheathed sword, a Flag Bearer with standard pole and shouldered Musket, a Drummer beating the advance and lastly a Sergeant with drawn sword and an ornate spontoon as well.  The mixed trooper poses are walking with shouldered musket, advancing with musket, reloading musket and finally raising musket to fire at the enemy.  These Dogmen are all 'poodle' types making them the same average height and bulk as an Elf and they use Standard Muskets.  They would make an excellent skirmish section in their own right. You  can choose this set of eight or a full unit of twenty with a saving or the option of purchasing a single trooper to add to your forces. We also offer the additional choice of purchase pro-painted and based by our team here in Scotland.  Go HERE.

56123 Pudigroan Line Casualties (4) 8.00GBP
This is a pack of 28mm white metal Dogman miniatures which give you the sadly now demised casualty markers for the 56589 Pudigroan Dogman Line miniatures.  As with those they will function equally well in the Confederation of Finklestein or older style Ostarian Empire forces.  This pack contains four randomly mixed of two poses.  The casualty poses are a dead Dogmen in line uniform with musket laying face up tongue lolling and tricorne by his side and a face down Dogman in line uniform arm outstretched.  These Dogmen are all 'poodle' types making them the same average height and bulk as an Elf and they use Standard Muskets.  They would make excellent diorama or scenic objectives in their own right. We also offer the additional choice of purchase pro-painted and based by our team here in Scotland.  Go HERE.

For players of our wargames you can find use these miniatures with 5028 Beir & Bones Flintloque 3rd edition, go HERE, and 5030 Slaughterloo go HERE.

We hope you enjoy these new miniatures which were designed, sculpted, molded and painted here in the UK and there are a lot more to come.  If you want to look at previous postings on our blog about the Ruined Kingdom of Pudigrochumsberg you can do so by looking to the right column and the 'Labels' section.  Seek out the 'Pudigrochumsberg' label and click on it.  This will bring up all of the posts.

Flintloque in Pudigrochumsberg during the Bier Wars

With the release of the first codes in the brand new Pudigrochumsberg Army I wanted to let Flintloque and Slaughterloo players and fans in on what is going on here at Alternative Armies in the World of Valon.  For while the Von Rotte Legion and the Army of the ruined Dog Kingdom are both allies of the Ferach Empire and enemies of Ostaria..they were not always so.  Back before the formation of the Confederation of Finklestein and the Krautian League, before the Elves marched to victory across central Urop there was the time of the Unified Powers, the time of the Severed Ears War or to give it the name the Dwarves favour..the Bier Wars!

The Dwarven Beir Wars focused on cities such as Monich, Barlin and Cohol and was on the whole a conflict between a hundred tiny stattes of Dwarves but it did spill out to the Dutchy of Brewswick and involved the then thriving kingdom of Pudigrochumsberg.  Both these smaller lands bordering what became the Confederation of Finklestein and while Artur of Krautia came to blows with Brewswick over the theft of bier casks it was a personal feud between Frederick Von Ales the Baron Von Rotte and the king of Pudigrochumsberg.  King Bonio of the Dogmen was a firm friend of the Baron and even offered his troops barracking and rations within Pudigrochumsberg when the opportunity arose.  However over a fine meal at the royal palace in Saltzbark the king offended the Baron in a way that led to a short war between the two!

Saltzbark is the capital of Pudigrochumsberg and then it was a thriving city famed for many fine goods and among those most to the fore was the tailoring of fine clothes.  As a gift for his friend Frederick Von Ales the king had several suits of silk clothes made and then presented them in person at the palace during the evening feast.  Smiling the Baron opened the ribbons securing the package of clothes and then as his face changed from jovial enjoyment to anger the chatter at the tables quietened and eventually even the musicians stopped playing. A passing Dogman servant looked over the Dwarf's shoulder and giggled. Standing the Baron threw the opened package along the full length of the table scattering food and drink as well as candles and cutlery.  The bundle skidded to as halt on the plate of the king who sat in open mouthed amazement at the other end of the great table.  The Baron roared in anger that he was no prancing Elf, no popinjay and that silver buttons fashioned thus were fit only for a Todoroni.  King Bonio stood and lifting out the garments from the strewn package realised with horror that they were actually meant for the queen.  A dress in bright pink silk with black lace and silver buttons in the shape of wine goblets.  Before anything else could be said the Baron Von Rotte rose and strode out of the hall and in a clatter of chairs his officers also rose and followed him.  At the double doors the now scarlet faced Baron shouted over his shoulder that Bonio should prepare for war.  That by the end of the year he would make the king wear that very dress and throw him in to the pens of the Pummilig riding Pigs.  And so began the short and vicious Silage War.

The War of Silage was a minor part of the Bier Wars but it saw two small but professional armies go toe to toe and featured three major battles and dozens of skirmishes which set the soldiers of Pudigrochumsberg in good stead for the coming war against Ostaria and its murdering lunatic leader the Emperior Klaffenhund.

So playing out The War of Silage in Flintloque as part of the Dwarf Bier Wars.  It is the goal of the Baron Von Rotte to capture the city of Saltzbark and thereby King Bonio to make the king wear the pink dress and to throw him in the pig pen.  To that end a chain of scenarios can be assembled building towards this goal.  I hope to get at least some of these scenarios ready and published for free during the time that Alternative Armies is sculpting and releasing Pudigroan miniatures and of course all of the Von Rotte Legion is already released.

The images in this article are all taken from the early work for the first scenario in the chain currently titled 'Paddling with Pigs'.  This scenario sees a border incursion by Hussar light cavalry against an outpost of Line infantry with the aim of preventing the Dwarves from crossing the river until a rider dispatched to battalion can bring some Dogman cavalry forward to assist the Pudigroan.

These will be interesting scenarios as they are set before the current backdrop of the Beir & Bones book for Flintloque and are closer to the Ferach Revolutionary Wars than the Mordredian Wars. You can visit the Von Rotte Legion and Pudigroan Dogmen on our website. Input is most welcome by email and comment as always and I hope you enjoyed reading this article.

28mm Dwarf Runic Golem Kit Concepting

“The Guild of Spellsmiths and the Guild of Blacksmiths do not often clank tankards of Beir but when they do great things happen.  Imagine said Gumblebeard the greatest of the white wizards what we could do with an axe wielder as large as the common Troll but alas our magics will not take a physical form on the field of battle without intricate preparation.  Such preparation is hard enough without some stinking Gobber trying to cave your skull in.  Tamble 'Blowback' Rustmaker chief of the Guild of Blacksmiths replied to this impassioned speech without spilling a drop of golden hops.  Such a huge warrior would be most welcome and we can hammer and smith our way to clothing him but there is no Dwarf in the realm so big to wear it...  Sparkes of raw mind forging flew from them both and with a resounding clank of tankards they spoke in unison.  Between us we can build it and bind it with magic runes.  A golem will take to the field of battle.  A Dwarf Runic Golem!”

The Alternative Armies studio headed up by our lead designer Sam Croes is working on a brand new addition to our High Fantasy range of 28mm scale miniatures.  Its going to be ready in a few weeks time and now does exist as a prototype model kit however this article is to introduce it and show you the concepting work that went into it.  A Runic Golem is a magic construct of the Dwarfs created by joint effort of their smiths and mages which then obeys simple instructions.  Its not a 'steam and cogs' creation its a magic one in a more traditional Dwarf under mountain stronghold.

As you can see the Dwarf Runic Golem stands about three times the height of a typical Dwarf warrior (the final model will be about 60mm tall) and is emblazoned with powerful runes all over its metal body.  It has thick steel armour making it a match for any Goblin or Orc and even smaller Trolls toe to toe.  It takes a lot of punishment to break the runes and consign this moving magic suit of armour to its end.

The form of the Runic Golem is that of a huge dwarven warrior.  Stocky, slightly hunched over and with a head sat directly onto its shoulders it is perfectly capable of fighting out in the open but it is in the caverns and tunnels that the golem comes into its own.  Able to press itself into the tunnels and using twin double headed axes to carve a path along them the golem can rid a hold of Goblins in short order.

We hope you have enjoyed looking at the concept art for this new 28mm scale kit.

The code of this all resin kit will be DH15 and it will join the other fourteen pack codes and a multitude giving you everything with a saving on the Dwarfish Hosts page of our website in a few weeks time.  We have about sixty five different poses and pieces in the DH series including Dwarfs, Halflings, Gnomes, Artillery, Cavalry and Adventurers.  Great for any fantasy system such as Song of Blades and Heroes. Enjoy!

OH13, OH14, OH15 Goblin Warrior Packs Released!

Three packs released into our classic 25mm / 28mm fantasy range by Alternative Armies.  We are at half way point with the OH series of codes and this time we give you the core Goblin Warriors (all from 1991 and designed by Andy Cooper) that are in the OH line.  Following up on last time when we gave you the excellent OH28 Goblin Chariot kit which is already on the website.  We have free worldwide postage just now on all orders over 10.00GBP product value until 30th September all you need to do is add to the cart the rest is automatic. The three packs are as follows:

“There are few blood feuds that are as deeply felt and as long lasting as that between the Dwarves and the Goblins.  Indeed in the under mountain and the great stone halls war is continual between these two wildly different races.  Armour and axes wielded with stubborn skill is matched with greater numbers and a wild joy of savagery with crude club and blade.  But they are not too different for in the tongues of both you will find brutal mention of each other.  The rune words of the Dwarvish for chamber pot and for cloak hook come from the crude diction of the goblinoid words for skull and nose respectively.  Among the goblinoids the words for meat and for cooking pot are exactly the same as the words for Dwarf and for breastplate.  Even among age old foes there is some humour it seems.”
