Flintloque in Pudigrochumsberg during the Bier Wars

With the release of the first codes in the brand new Pudigrochumsberg Army I wanted to let Flintloque and Slaughterloo players and fans in on what is going on here at Alternative Armies in the World of Valon.  For while the Von Rotte Legion and the Army of the ruined Dog Kingdom are both allies of the Ferach Empire and enemies of Ostaria..they were not always so.  Back before the formation of the Confederation of Finklestein and the Krautian League, before the Elves marched to victory across central Urop there was the time of the Unified Powers, the time of the Severed Ears War or to give it the name the Dwarves favour..the Bier Wars!

The Dwarven Beir Wars focused on cities such as Monich, Barlin and Cohol and was on the whole a conflict between a hundred tiny stattes of Dwarves but it did spill out to the Dutchy of Brewswick and involved the then thriving kingdom of Pudigrochumsberg.  Both these smaller lands bordering what became the Confederation of Finklestein and while Artur of Krautia came to blows with Brewswick over the theft of bier casks it was a personal feud between Frederick Von Ales the Baron Von Rotte and the king of Pudigrochumsberg.  King Bonio of the Dogmen was a firm friend of the Baron and even offered his troops barracking and rations within Pudigrochumsberg when the opportunity arose.  However over a fine meal at the royal palace in Saltzbark the king offended the Baron in a way that led to a short war between the two!

Saltzbark is the capital of Pudigrochumsberg and then it was a thriving city famed for many fine goods and among those most to the fore was the tailoring of fine clothes.  As a gift for his friend Frederick Von Ales the king had several suits of silk clothes made and then presented them in person at the palace during the evening feast.  Smiling the Baron opened the ribbons securing the package of clothes and then as his face changed from jovial enjoyment to anger the chatter at the tables quietened and eventually even the musicians stopped playing. A passing Dogman servant looked over the Dwarf's shoulder and giggled. Standing the Baron threw the opened package along the full length of the table scattering food and drink as well as candles and cutlery.  The bundle skidded to as halt on the plate of the king who sat in open mouthed amazement at the other end of the great table.  The Baron roared in anger that he was no prancing Elf, no popinjay and that silver buttons fashioned thus were fit only for a Todoroni.  King Bonio stood and lifting out the garments from the strewn package realised with horror that they were actually meant for the queen.  A dress in bright pink silk with black lace and silver buttons in the shape of wine goblets.  Before anything else could be said the Baron Von Rotte rose and strode out of the hall and in a clatter of chairs his officers also rose and followed him.  At the double doors the now scarlet faced Baron shouted over his shoulder that Bonio should prepare for war.  That by the end of the year he would make the king wear that very dress and throw him in to the pens of the Pummilig riding Pigs.  And so began the short and vicious Silage War.

The War of Silage was a minor part of the Bier Wars but it saw two small but professional armies go toe to toe and featured three major battles and dozens of skirmishes which set the soldiers of Pudigrochumsberg in good stead for the coming war against Ostaria and its murdering lunatic leader the Emperior Klaffenhund.

So playing out The War of Silage in Flintloque as part of the Dwarf Bier Wars.  It is the goal of the Baron Von Rotte to capture the city of Saltzbark and thereby King Bonio to make the king wear the pink dress and to throw him in the pig pen.  To that end a chain of scenarios can be assembled building towards this goal.  I hope to get at least some of these scenarios ready and published for free during the time that Alternative Armies is sculpting and releasing Pudigroan miniatures and of course all of the Von Rotte Legion is already released.

The images in this article are all taken from the early work for the first scenario in the chain currently titled 'Paddling with Pigs'.  This scenario sees a border incursion by Hussar light cavalry against an outpost of Line infantry with the aim of preventing the Dwarves from crossing the river until a rider dispatched to battalion can bring some Dogman cavalry forward to assist the Pudigroan.

These will be interesting scenarios as they are set before the current backdrop of the Beir & Bones book for Flintloque and are closer to the Ferach Revolutionary Wars than the Mordredian Wars. You can visit the Von Rotte Legion and Pudigroan Dogmen on our website. Input is most welcome by email and comment as always and I hope you enjoyed reading this article.

Luthia a Valon Tale by Ken Baggaley

The World of Valon is an inspiring place indeed. As well as being the fictional setting for the Mordredian Wars and wargames such as Flintloque and Slaughterloo it is also a place of many tall tales and a great amount of stories. Many of these are created by Alternative Armies but a good deal are written by fans of Valon and this is the case for Luthia. Written by Ken Baggaley the land of Luthia is a place of adventure and 'fun' for the downtrodden Dwarves who go there. A great read its a must for fans of Valon.

We have created a PDF of the tale which features artwork as yet never seen by Valonian artist Edward Jackson.

You can download the full four page with artwork PDF of the Luthia tale from our dropbox account for free using this link. Click HERE.

Well done Ken!

Sharkes Gingerbread - Flintloque Scenario now free on Notables Group

The specially written Flintloque scenario used at the Salute 2012 wargame convention is now a free file to download from The Notables Yahoo Group.  Sharkes Gingerbread is a three page packed scenario which sees our favourite Rifleorc face off against creatures baked in ovens and a baker who would see them all doomed!  Scenario, special rules and more.  Here is the introduction:

There are places in Catalucia where magicke still exists in its rawest and weirdest form. Most of the time these places are overlooked and never visited even in times of war. So it would not come as a surprise to some of you to know that it is in these magicke charged places that a refugee from the privations of the Witchlands has taken up residence….Bakerov the Undead brother of the infamous Doctorov.

Bakerov fled the icy climes of his native land when the Dark Czar called him experiments into confectionary based troops too much heresy even for the liche master himself. Taking his two Dwarven assistants as well as all of his tools and equipment he even packed up his home onto a convoy of wagons and headed for where the master of the Witchlands has no influence; the sunny climes of Catalucia.

All would have been well except for the chance arrival of an Elvish patrol in the hidden valley where Bakerov had rebuilt his strange house. The patrol arrived just as Bakerov’s experiments reached a successful climax…the creation of Gingerbread Men soldiers!

These Gingerbread Men made short work of the shocked Elves and then burst out in to the valley where they were confronted by another conflict that has somehow found its way into the same valley. That of Captain Rekhardt Sharke and his Rifleorcs against the Trolkin 3rd Lergo Line led by messers Bange & Oafson. These enemies are about to set about each others throats…and the Gingerbread House and its denizens are right in the middle!

I had a great time at the show and we played the scenario through four times across the day.  Not all of the Kyng's Shillings handed out were returned to the stand for free Flintloque items as some wargamers just wanted the coin!

You can find the Gingerbread Men pack HERE.

There are some six hundred and fifty members of the Notables Yahoo Group and its a place where there is more than 100mb of free files, hundreds of pictures, a legacy of more than twenty thousand messages along with wargamers to talk to. I also frequent the group several times a day and I am always happy to pitch in on all conversations including items not to appear here. Its well worth joining this Yahoo Group and while you must apply to join this is just a formality and I will sign you in (you need do this only once) where you can pull up a virtual armchair and talk about our games and miniatures. DH14 Dwarf Blunderbusses at Alternative Armies

“Those Dwarfs who choose to take up the exotic weapons of the runesmiths known as 'Blunderbusses' are viewed with some suspicion by other Dwarf warriors. While they are not avoided like the beserkers are or stood back from like the pig riders they are given a healthy distance due to their choice of armament. Few know the secrets of the magic infused powder that is the fuel of the Blunderbuss and while they see an echo of the mighty bombard in the little balls that are rammed into the mouth of the weapon it is sorcery and the axe is to be preferred. In battle these Dwarfs form a great line and wait for the enemy to draw near and this can give even a Giant Troll cause for concern. Standing still with their 'sticks' these Dwarfs seem frozen in fear. But they are not. As one they touch fire to their pans and with booming retorts the blunderbuss’s fire. As if a nest of iron hornets is raised in anger the foe is decimated by these exotic weapons.”

This code contains six different 25mm/28mm white metal miniatures approx 24mm average height. Great quality, great choice and great value too. Go HERE

Poses in this code are as follows:

DH14-01: Dwarf loading Blunderbuss in cloak and helmet.
DH14-02: Dwarf with Blunderbuss and slung Axe.
DH14-03: Dwarf with Blunderbuss holding helmet.
DH14-04: Dwarf in mail armour with Blunderbuss.
DH14-05: Dwarf with Blunderbuss and slung Spade.
DH14-06: Dwarf in cavern fighters gear with Blunderbuss.

These miniatures are not supplied with bases and are supplied unpainted. Select your choice from the drop down product menu. Choose from a pack, three packs with a 10% saving applied and single miniatures. Total choice! Assembly is required with some white metal miniatures.

The Alternative Armies classic high fantasy range dates from the period of the early 1990's through to the end of that decade. Designed by leading names in the wargaming industry and highly successful in its day this range has been on hiatus. Alternative Armies, under the name 'Project Darkhelm' is dedicated to re-mastering, re-molding and re-releasing this entire range back onto the market. During and beyond this process Project Darkhelm will see the range continue to be expanded in the mediums of white metal and high grade resin using top industry designers in new releases. Every pose in each pack is unique with no duplicates making them perfect for skirmish wargaming, roleplaying and unit building for any battle system.

54050 Valon Civilians by Christian Cuello released!

Flintloque players went slightly bonkers over Mr Cuello's last miniature 56131 Ludwig Von Barkhoven in 2014 with hundreds of castings of it winging around the world when it released and way more when it went out free as an offer too.  After that success five more civilians for use with Flintloque were created and now they are on general release.  Five diverse characters with a lot of potential uses which could be fitting in to any number of collections and scenarios.  I can see them being many things and I think this was Mr Cuello's idea as well.  There are some civilians in our range but certainly there is room for many more too. Go HERE.

From the left, in the line across images, these 28mm white metal miniatures are:

Hanz Stammerhunde
A Dogman in civilian costume with Tricorne Hat and Blunderbuss which stands 30mm tall.  A brave fellow Hanz Stammerhunde used to be a country gentledog until the war with Pudigrochumberg rolled across his small estate and ruined it.  Now Hanz has no choice but to be a highway robber and rascal and while he attempts to be harm innocents he is no stanger to danger. At home in Ostaria or the Confederation of Finklestein.

Bernurd Mucksorc
An Orc in civilian costume with buttoned up coat and Tricorne Hat which stands 30mm tall.  A shady chap Bernurd Muscksorc is a wanted Orc.  He used to work in the stamping works of the Banke of Albion until the lure of coin took his mind.  Making off with two sacks of groats he is now in hiding from the Bone Streete Rumblers.  His presentable appearance is his best asset but how long will he avoid the noose? Many uses both urban and rural but in Londinium or Wheeling-Turns Camp in Catalucia you could use him.

Alf Graxley
An Orc in civilian costume with the look of a miner or other manual worker which stands 28mm tall. Alf Graxley wears a flat cap and has a knife in hand and he is an honest Orc.  He used to be a thug and leg breaker in Skarkills Trade Onion but now he has gone back to work in the barrel cellar of the Pixie's Rear a pub in Cheapestsides in Londinium.  His accent often gets him into scrapes as he is from Yorcshire but he holds his own.  Many uses in scenarios.

Otto Von Slacken
A Dwarf in civilian costume which stands 22mm tall.  Otto Von Slacken is a lumber jack (Wood Cutter) who carries an Axe and is wearing a fur trimmed cloak and sock cap.  In the rough and tumble of Kartoffelburg the daily trades continue despite the carnage and war in the region and this Dwarf fells trees and then sells fire wood as he travels around.  He has great knowledge of the region and is willing to act as a guide for those soldiers who lose their way..for a price.

Nico Ebayrisold
A Gnome in well fitted civilian costume wearing spectacles with his hand behind his back he stands 18mm tall.  Nico Ebayrisold is from the Swizzic Republique like the rest of his kind his passion is counting and banking.  With a mind that is as fast as Mr Babborcs Differecing Engine he is currently in Catalucia assisting Wheeling-Turn in the accounts for the Army of Albion.  He would make an excellent scenario objective or assistant to any Army or perhaps a wealthy merchant with a personal bodyguard. Our first Gnome of Zoorik in the miniature range.

54050 Valon Civilians
This pack contains five different 28mm white metal miniatures for use in Flintloque or any other fantasy system.  A Dogman armed with Blunderbuss, an Orc in Tricorne, an Orc with knife, a Dwarf carrying an Axe and a Gnome wearing spectacles.  Five civilians with many different scenario uses.  This code can be purchased as a pack or as single miniatures from the pack in a choice in the on page drop down menu.  You can also purchase the pack and singles pro-painted and based by selecting those options in the drop down menu.   Go HERE.

If you have not seen Barkhoven then you can go to our website HERE.  There is a free download character sheet for him too which is on these links.  Its a rock and roll period for fans of Alternative Armies and especially Flintloque and Slaughterloo with many new releases as well as offers and much excellence being put up on our Notables Yahoo Group.  Its well worth joining this Yahoo Group and while you must apply to join this is just a formality and I will sign you in where you can pull up a virtual armchair and talk about our games and miniatures.  Here is the link:  Notables Group.

Orcs in the Hills fanzine to return for a Slaughterloo special!

This year is the 200th Anniversary of a battle that shaped the future of not only Europe but the whole world. The Battle of Waterloo saw an end to the campaigns of Napoleon Bonaparte and the humbling of France. While our sister brand 15mm.co.uk will be bringing the whole classic 15mm Napoleonics range back to market in time for this anniversary here at Alternative Armies we have something rather different planned. Back in the 1990's when Flintloque was but an infant and far from the global name it was to become it had a fanzine. A fanzine called 'Orcs in the Hills'. A black and white booklet printed in A5 format which contained scenarios, articles, idea, reviews and more about Flintloque. There has not been an issue of this fanzine in more than a decade but that is going to change this year as I am bringing it back for one more issue. A Slaughterloo special!

I will be doing almost all the work on this special issue of Orcs in the Hills myself. With the able pen hand of Edward Jackson providing artwork and also an article from my co-author of Flintloque 3rd Edition Mike White. It will be a labour of love done mainly in my own time and filled with articles I know Flintloque and Slaughterloo wargamers will want to read. There will be a difference of approach though and here is how. This issue will not be released in print at a price upon our website. No. Instead it will be serialised for free and put up in parts as PDF files on the Notables Yahoo Group. This will be across a number of weeks much in the way Charles Dickens used to serialise his stories in newspapers.

I made a start on this with the Flintloque Mega Scenario – Sharkes Farmhouse. You can see this HERE on the blog.

There are some six hundred and fifty members of the Notables Yahoo Group and its a place where there is more than 100mb of free files, hundreds of pictures, a legacy of more than twenty thousand messages along with wargamers to talk to. Back at the start of March 2015 I placed the whole of Barking Irons Magazine No1 on the Notables for free download. See that HERE on the blog.

The world of wargaming is a big place but Flintloque and its mass battle sister game is a close knit community of like minded wargamers who like fantasy, napoleonics, humour and unique miniatures. If this is of interest come along. More details on the Notables.

Seemed like a good announcement to make on my birthday. :-)

Synopsis on Notables Yahoo Group - Sharkes Farmhouse Scenario

I have placed a synopsis of a Flintloque mega scenario titled 'Sharkes Farmhouse' over on our venerable and popular Yahoo Group - The Notables.  If you are interested in reading it, commenting and or contibuting on the thread or if you just like Flintloque or any other of our wargame systems please do click through.  If you are not a member you will be asked to join.  This is just a formality so say hi and I will join you to the group.  We are a friendly bunch.

Sharkes Farmhouse
Or – Will our Hero buy the Farm?
A Flintloque Mega Scenario for One to Four Players.
During the climactic and titanic battle of Slaughterloo there were dozens of smaller engadgements between the warring divisions as the Tyrant Mordred tried just one more time to put Urop under his heel. Among these smaller engadgements the struggle to hold the vital farm buildings of La Hesitant was paramount and comparable only to the blood bath of Hurtenblunt. Defended by detachments of the Krautian Giant Legion including skirmishers and by an escorting assortment of Rifleorcs led by Major Sharke caught in passing by the advance of Ferach troops. Will Sharke and his Orcs, with the help of the K.G.L Ogres, be able to hold against massed attacks by the Elves? Or will they crumble, the farm fall and the Armoricans be triumphant before General Pik-Tan can plug the gap?

Read the rest over on the group.

This great piece of artwork which depicts an Al-Garvey Goblin officer rubbing his hands in delight while looking at his latest box of goodies just delivered from Alternative Armies here in the real world.  Excellent!

First Look at Flintloque Characters by Christian Cuello

Flintloque players went slightly bonkers over Mr Cuello's last miniature 56131 Ludwig Von Barkhoven in 2014 with hundreds of castings of it winging around the world when it released and way more when it went out free as an offer too.  After that success Mr Cuello has decided to sculpt five more civilians for use with Flintloque.  Five diverse characters with a lot of potential uses which could be fitting in to any number of collections and scenarios.  I can see them being many things and I think this was Mr Cuello's idea as well.  There are some civilians in our range but certainly there is room for many more too.

From the left these as yet untitled miniatures are:

Dogman in civilian costume with Tricorne Hat and Blunderbuss.  Could be a country gentleman or a highway rascal in Ostaria or the Confederation of Finklestein.

Orc in civilian costume with buttoned up coat and Tricorne Hat.  Many uses both urban and rural.  I see him in Londinium or Wheeling-Turns Camp in Catalucia.

Orc in civilian costume with the look of a miner or other manual worker.  A flat cap and a knife in hand suitable as hired muscle or thug.

Dwarf in civilian costume who could be a lumber jack or such trade carrying an Axe and wearing a fur trimmed cloak and sock cap.  Could also be festive fun!

Gnome.  A Gnome of Zoorik! A first really and could make an excellent assistant for an Elf, Orc, Dogman or anyone else.  Wearing squared glasses and merchant's garb.

If you have not seen Barkhoven then you can go to our website HERE or see a blog posting about this miniature on our blog HERE.  There is a free download character sheet for him too which is on these links.

This set will be released as a pack code with the option of single miniature purchase from it.  This will be during our convention season which starts this month and the details of this convention season will be published soon. So you will be able to purchase in a few weeks time. Its going to be a rock and roll period for fans of Alternative Armies and especially Flintloque and Slaughterloo with many new releases as well as offers and much excellence being put up on our Notables Yahoo Group.  Its well worth joining this Yahoo Group and while you must apply to join this is just a formality and I will sign you in where you can pull up a virtual armchair and talk about our games and miniatures.  Here is the link:  Notables Group.

Preparing for the OITW Advent Calendar 2014 - Uncle Rogipoos Scenario

It is reaching that point in the year again where Flintloque fans begin to look forward to the annual advent calendar from Orcs in the Webbe.  A whole month of daily fun where the master of OITW Craig Andrews will be stunning and hurrahing his way through the Cryptmass Season with fiction, scenarios, articles, art and more all about the World of Valon.  Its getting to be a real tradition and I, on behalf of Alternative Armies, will be doing my part.

While I plan several items (no spoilers!) the focus of this post is about a Flintloque scenario for this years advent calendar in memory of a fine fellow and great fan of Flintloque who sadly passed away this year.  Mr Willcox was a very popular member of the Notables Yahoo Group who created a fictional character known as Uncle Rogipoos.  So keen were we all to know of this adventurer and to use him in our games that a set of miniatures (VLE10) were created to allow this to happen.

It is my intention to create a Flintloque scenario with the help of experienced wargames scenario writer Mark Lesney all about Uncle Rogipoos in a mad cap situation with a fellow rascal Villiam Bedsforc the 'Bombardier' (VLE12).  This also seemed fitting since the loss of the actor and comedian who inspired this miniature code also occurred this year.

The scenario will see the two of them pair up against the evil of the Sproutoids when the barriers of Magicke are at their weakest.  But will these Orcs save Valon or will the swirling vortex take them beyond their world and into the ultimate unknown?

You will be able to read this scenario for free in December.

Four Page Insert for 51533 Elf Dragoons - A Flintloque Resource

We present a Four Page Insert by Gavin B Syme (author of Flintloque 3rd edition) which is being supplied with every unit of the modular Elf Dragoons.  This insert gives a lot of information for Armorican Line Dragoons in both Flintloque and Slaughterloo.  Including Fiction, Dragoons in the Armorican Army, Uniforms, an account of the 18th Dragoons, Flintloque statistics, Slaughterloo Profile and more.  CLICK HERE to download it as a PDF from our online storage.

Flintloque and Slaughterloo fans alike have already been placing their orders for the awesome new 51533 Elf Line Dragoons modular white metal 28mm miniatures set.  Its released soon on 7th October 2014 and until then on our Deals and Offers page you can find them on pre-release offer at 10% and 20% off release price. Excellent!

We currently have (until the middle of this month) some Deals and Offers which you might find interesting to combine with an order for the 51533 Ferach Elf Dragoons. These can all be found on our WEBSITE.  59000 The Armourers Pack (32 Random Muskets) is 25% off meaning you can convert or add to your Flintloque forces with ease.   In gunnery terms for fans of Slaughterloo and Flintloque we have a superb half price offer on the 59501 Grand Alliance Artillery Set (three cannons and two limber sets).  For personalities we have 15% off the great 51507 Elf Command Set for fans of the tyrant Emperor Mordred.  Our popular boxed set 5104 105th Rifles with 18 different Orcs in it is also 15% off so if you want to get some back up for Captain Sharke and his Rifleorc's this is your time.

Free in all orders, taking over from the resin riding pig, is another brand new conversion to resin for Alternative Armies; 56563 Trolka Jager firing.  It is our intention to convert the entire 28mm range of massive Trolka infantry away from white metal and into resin instead.  This will mean a price reduction and it starts with quite a reduction.  That being one free Trolka Jager in every order automatically.  A wee gift worth 5.00GBP which you can also purchase more of it you desire.  So 56563 Trolka Jager firing free in every order and on general release at a lower price too.  Superb!

If you missed Sam Croes modelling and painting article on the Dragoons then you are missing out. Go HERE to read it on the Alternative Armies blog.

Dampf's modelling page: Finklestein Dwarf project complete!

Finklestein Dwarves
Congratulations to Tony Harwood on completing his July 2014 online build for his personal Flintloque collection.  I have been watching this online build since it kicked off at the start of the month.  Tony kept us all up to date on the Notables Yahoo Group of his progress and unveiled a surprise too right at the end of the process.  He created the section with his own ideas which is right at the heart of the Flintloque ethos. Their uniform...his old school blazer!

The little red 'surprise'
Tony is a big fan of the Dwarves of Flintloque and has his own Sauerkraut Wars setting as well.

Getting started early July 2014
You can read all about the process across its four parts.  Beginning with Part One then Part Two moving on to Part Three and finally Part Four.

Excellent work!

Dampf's modelling page: Legion Irlandaise project complete!

The Legion Irlandaise!
Congratulations to Tony Harwood on completing his June 2014 online build for his personal Flintloque collection.  I have been watching the eight parts of this online build since it kicked off at the start of the month.  Tony teased us all by having members of the Notables Yahoo Group try and guess which Valonian regiment he was converting and painting.  I had an idea and was proved almost correct.  A Ferach allied Guinalean Bog Orc regiment, one which he named Legion Irlandaise.

A beginning on the 4th of June - Part One
Part Two sees more conversions and work and upto seven models now!
The Seven as converted for Part Three
There are eight parts in this series and I have placed links to each below.  I suggest you begin with the first and then go on from there to the last.  If you are keen only on conversions or only on painting then there is a lot to see:

There was an eighth figure added in part seven which I think was a great idea. There is a rumour that another online build will be undertaken in July...happy modelling Tony.

The Hills are Alive!

Private Rorc scratched a flea out from behind his left ear, got ya he thought to himself and grinned.

It was late afternoon, and Rorc had been placed on sentry duty. He turned to see the rest of his section making camp and getting ready for a brisk evening in the green, rolling Ostarian hills. His sergeant’s warning fumbled its way through his brain, as his eyes flicked around the general area… “the ‘ills are alive.” Rorc spun around and brought his musket to bear in front of him. “Who izzit?” he asked the empty field infront of him. He swore he had heard something… and not the kind of noise a forest makes. He squinted, and in the afternoon light he could make out some figures in the distance. A series of ululating notes drifted their way down the valley to his pointed ears. Was that… singing? Not like he’d heard… definitely not during last night’s bout in town. What he wouldn’t do for some of that Dwarven ale… blimey, he’d even settle for some of that Dogmen brew that tasted like p-

“Oi, Rorc!” Sergeant Andorcson bellowed “Quit yer day-dreamin’, you’re on watch!”
“But I’ve seen sumfin’, sir!”
“You what?”
“I’ve seen sumfin’, sir, high… on the hills!”
The Sergeant grabbed a spying glass from a nearby trunk.
“Looks like a goat’erd”.
“A goat’erd?”
“Yer, on his own, too. A lonely goat’erd.”
“Ley-yodel-ley-yodel-ley…” the sound of the goatherd’s singing reached the small camp.
“’Cept for ‘is goats, that is” added Rorc.
“Good job, Rorc” said the Sergeant derisively.

Deflated, Rorc resumed his watch, and his scratching. Bloody dwarf, he thought as he squinted up at the hills again, maybe he’s got some grog?

***

Gustav von Trapp peered down to the campsite below, clutching his hooded cloak over his uniform, and his crook for effect. Although he had lost an eye his vision was still sharp, and his wits sharper. He and his brothers had been on the trail of these Orcs for some time now, and it posed little challenge the experienced woodsmen. He knelt down and patted his dog. The pug looked up at him expectantly “Not much of a guard dog” he said, chuckling.

“Gustav! How much longer to ve haff to stay here?”

“Be patient, Werner, and don’t move around so much. You are a goat, remember?” he chuckled. He was enjoying this, and there was little he enjoyed these days. A good draught, a good sing, and a chance to beat the Orcs back to Albion where they belonged. Or preferably back under whatever rock they came from. The simple life he lived had been taken away from him and his brothers, and he blamed the Orcs and the Grand Alliance… bah, he spat, there was nothing grand about it. Looters, pilferers, thieves, vagabonds, and worse. He had not been keen on the Elves, either. But, the enemy of my enemy…  He seethed into silence before signalling to his fur-draped brothers that it was time to move. Gustav lead his band as they scampered down the hill towards cover on all fours, their disguise was working it seemed.

Night was coming. The trap was set.

As they moved Gustav softly hummed their marching song, his single eye glinting in the twilight.
