All of Jes Goodwins 1980’s Orcs for Asgard are now restored!

Ka Boom!  It has taken a year and happened in three parts but this day sees the completion of the project of restoration of the entirety Jes Goodwin’s classic Orcs made for Asgard in the early 1980’s.  A total of forty infantry Orcs, four Wolf Rider Orcs and now finally a cannon and its two crew.  Every miniature is a single and all painted by the talented Studio Maxi (who even did free hand designs on shields!).

As well as being single poses there are saver packs and now the massive Orc War Tribe which has every single model in the range within it.  Here are the details of the last releases in this project.

ORG1 Orc Cannon Kit (Body, Wheels, Hoops, Barrel and Cannon Ball)

ORG2 Orc Gunner with Match

ORG3 Orc Gunner with Rammer

ORP03 Orc War Tribe:  Get the ultimate skirmish force of forty seven metal 28mm scale Orcs with four cavalry rider Orcs on Wolves and a Cannon Kit.  The entire Jes Goodwin range of Orcs from Asgard.  It has a ten percent built in saving.

All the images of the Orcs are from the talented brush hand of Studio Maxi who has really brought them to life including hand painted shield motifs and more.  You can see how they scale next to our own Crystal Empire Elves (1993) as well as Human Militia from the Fantasy Warlord Range (1990) and Jes’s excellent Dwarfs (1985).  The Orcs vary in size from the Great Orcs (OR1-4), Orc Trackers (OR5-8), Orc Soldiers (OR18-21) and Cave Orcs (OR9-12) for example; fitted to their roles.

By request we have added the option to all of the Orc Wolf Riders (OR25-28) to get the rider and wolf or just the wolf on its own.  The wolf is among the nicest examples of its type of the era..a real fierce beast of teeth and fur.

Alternative Armies is committed to restoring all that we can of the Asgard ranges and Tabletop Miniature ranges as well.  Thus far we have restored most of the 15mm Historical Ranges as well as Laserburn and Asgard Sci-fi in that same scale.  We have brought back the Dragon Lizards as well as Space Marines by Nick Bibby and his massive Dragon too.  Almost the entire FM Fantasy Range is back in the world.  The process continues in 2025!

Thanks for your Time

Barbarians by Jez Goodwin restored 1980’s new pictures

We were asked and it has been done!  Sculpted by Jes Goodwin in the early 1980’s and to some among the finest 28mm Barbarians to exist in metal these codes were among the first Alternative Armies restored in Project Asgard.

Project Asgard was in its early days and hence the pictures were not among the best (ten years ago eh!) so they have been updated.  We have just restored the three Barbarian Centaurs as well so it seemed a good time and on top of that two set saver packs.  One with a saving off the full dozen and the other with a free Midsummer Druidess included.

Every miniature has a new picture of front and rear and these painted ones are from the personal collection of Sam Croes.  Above is our second favourite of them BP2 Fire Daughter.

These work in any game system as characters or rank and file in your warband.  The meanest of the bunch is of course BP12 Hax Ragged above; our favourite.

Enjoy the new pictures and we have an article coming later this year from Olihot27 who has a fantastic collection of Mr Goodwin’s restored miniatures from these Barbarians as well as his Dwarfs and from the Fantasy Monsters range.

Thanks for Reading!

Jes Goodwin Centaurs restored added to the 80s 28mm Barbarian Range

The good work of restoring the classic 1980’s high fantasy ranges of Asgard Miniatures proceeds at Alternative Armies with two more requested poses by Jes Goodwin. These followed up on his restored Barbarians Collection and fit right in with them. These lovely examples were painted by the talented Studio Maxi Costales who has done such sterling brush work on so many returned classics. In the woods below with our useful Handcart behind them.

Part of the Fantasy Monsters (FM) Range of which we have now restored about eighty percent of the one hundred poses each of these Centaurs is part horse and part man standing about 40mm tall.  Have a gander at the FM range for all manner of monsters and creatures.

Shown for scale DA18 High Elf Adventurer from the Dungeon Adventurers Range which is 28mm tall.  The new codes are FM99 Centaur with Bow and FM100v2 Centaur with Spear which follow up on FM98 Centaur with Sword.  These are our last restored releases for this month.

One of the first collections Alternative Armies returned to the world was the twelve pose strong Barbarians by Jes Goodwin.  These are offered as singles and two different sets of all twelve.  The first set gives a small saving and the second set gives you FL24-01 Midsummer Druidess for free included (one of the FL24 Winter and Summer Heroines set).

Thanks for your Time!

Asgard Orcs by Jes Goodwin restored part two OR25 to OR40

The time is here! Asked for and now on the website the second part of three of the total restoration of Jes Goodwin’s classic Orcs made for Asgard in the early 1980’s. Sixteen codes as single miniatures, plus get the wolves and riders as singles as well and a warband set of all with a good saving too.

Painted by Studio Maxi with hand painted shields in the style that such superb miniatures deserve we present OR25 to OR40.  Wolf Riders for the speed as well as brutal Black Orcs and cowardly Slave Orcs and lastly the Clan Orcs. So much attitude and style in every one of them.

These Orcs work really well in 28mm scale. Great for any system.  Every miniature has an image of its front, side and rear plus a height gauge as well.

These follow on the mighty restoration of part one which brought you twenty four Orcs the bulk of the infantry.  Above is OR2 Great Orc Spearmen from that first lot of releases.

We have been at this for several years now and we want to thank all of you for your support and kind words in this mighty project. Part Three the final part of the Orc range will appear late in 2024 with a boom and the biggest value set of all.

FM74v2 Water Elemental remastered 1980s release from Asgard Miniatures

"The undines are troublesome things from the smallest who froth the ale in your tankard to the greatest which can overturn a hundred oar galley with ease. Mages claim control of them but I am not so sure. Things so strange to us of flesh and bone; who knows how their briny minds work. As it is many of my men have salt worked into their armour from encounters. Water Elementals...drown them all!"

Now remastered and added to the now nearly complete Fantasy Monsters (FM) Range by Asgard Miniatures is the second version of the FM74 Water Elemental which joins all manner of creatures, undead, animals and oddities of some 60 poses.

This any scale metal one piece creature stands 45mm tall to the top of its head. Decorated with coral, rope and seaweed it wields a spear and a net. Our example painted by talented Studio Maxi with a sculpted sea base (40mm square). Supplied unpainted and without a base. Shown with a 28mm scale Jes Goodwin Orc and a 15mm knight from the Tabletop 15mm Fantasy Range

We like to give our customers a treat so there is always something free in every package shipped out by us here in Scotland. Until July 8th it is part one of our Devilish Imps; four any scale miniatures. Read about this in the ARTICLE. No catch..totally free in orders.

Thank you for Reading!

Dungeon Adventurers 1980’s range restore begins with Dwarfs by Bibby and Goodwin

Those who have been following Alternative Armies for the last seven years or so will know that we are intent on reviving as much of the classic Asgard and Tabletop ranges that we can.  First created and sold in the early 1980’s and sculpted by legends such as Nick Bibby and Jes Goodwin the time has come for the start of the Dungeon Adventurers Range to be restored into production. The natural foes of the Fantasy Monster Range and allies or enemies of the Creatures of Chaos or the Jes Goodwin Asgard Orcs this range covers Dwarfs, Gnomes, Elves, Halflings, Humans and much more.

This very large range contains some ninety poses all in and it is our intent to bring these to you in groups across time.  We begin now.  All the miniatures were painted by the talented Studio Maxi and while shown here in a group they are all as singles on the website.  Here are the codes:

DA1 Dwarf Thief

DA1a Dwarf Fighter

DA2 Dwarf in Platemail

DA3 Dwarf Lord

DA4 Dwarf Cleric

(by Nick Bibby)

DA5 Dwarf Shieldbearer

DA6 Dwarf Crossbowman

DA7v1 Dwarf King

DA8 Dwarf Adventurer

DA9 Dwarf Adventuress

DA10 Dwarf Trader

(by Jes Goodwin)

                                                                   DA7v2 Dwarf King

                                                                   (by Steve Trickett)

Above you can see a couple of these Dungeon Adventurers range Dwarfs alongside the Jes Goodwin 1985 Dwarfs and they work well together.  Codes DA1 to DA4 are larger and DA5 to DA10 are a bit smaller.

Until 10th June 2024 the classic Asgard F6 Large Rat is free automatically in all shipped packages (see it above alongside FM77 Medium Rat which is half price in our Deals and Offers page).  Tunnel fighting beckons!

There is a direct tie in between the Dungeon Adventurers Range in 28mm scale and the Tabletop Games 15mm Fantasy Range with many of the characters mirrored in the smaller scale.

Thank you for reading and for your continued support is keeping the golden age of British Wargaming alive some forty years later.

Creatures of Chaos range returns Asgard 80’s Fantasy by Bibby, Blanche and Goodwin

Not often is it possible to return to the world something wonderful in its complete form but this is such a day. In 1982 Asgard Miniatures released the Creatures of Chaos Range sculpted by Nick Bibby, Jez Goodwin and John Blanche.  It is now on its own page of the restored Asgard drop down menu of the website.  Our set was painted by the talented Studio Maxi Costales bringing them to life.

Nine different...very different...miniatures as singles or as a value set of all nine of them with a saving.

CC0 Creatures of Chaos Set (9 Miniatures with a Saving)

CC1 Running Hornhead  (35mm total height)

CC2 Many Armed Skulker (30mm total height)

CC3 Hawk Footed Stabber (40mm total height)

CC4 Hoofer Bladesman (30mm total height)

CC5 Crabclaw (40mm total height)

CC6 Trunkhand Tuskoid  (40mm total height)

CC7 Four Fang (35mm height, 45mm long)

CC8 Hideous Octopoid (28mm total height)

CC9 Crested Weremonkey (23mm total height comes with separate wings)

Sculpted by Nick Bibby except for CC6 by John Blanche and CC7 by Jez Goodwin he of The Barbarians Range.

A majestic (and also the largest single piece metal miniature we produce) often listed alongside the Creatures of Chaos figures is the D6 Dragon Lizard Juggernaut by Nick Bibby.  A real centre piece for an army it is 110mm long.

A source of real price for Alternative Armies was the restoration of NB2 Dragon which was issued initially as a 200 only limited run of boxed metal models (over half a kilo of metal).  We have a couple of these limited kits on site.  This famous Dragon is now a resin kit at a much lower price and an easier build...plus a lot, lot lighter.
